Trulli Vermont

Trulli Vermont is a project to put a water tight stone roof over our existing hand made brick pizza oven.

The trullo roof is a system of building circular roofs in stone, used in Southern Italy. These are made this way because in this region of Italy, people didn’t have lots of wood to use for timbers in the house. Most of the trees are olives and that wood is rarely harvested and used for anything, as it’s most valuable producing precious olives.

We will build with local stone and will shape each stone so that the inner and outer edges are both roughly circular, and edged to shed water. Each stone will then be laid on the course on the roof we are working on, in a bonded pattern, such that the joint of the stone pair below will be completely covered by the stone above. We will be using the techniques Michael and I learned in working with masons in Italy to restore these structures. It will be fun and difficult at the same time. Learning to use hammers, work as a team and create stone shingles will be a challenge. It will be a soft gray upside down ice cream cone when completed. for more ideas and information please visit the section of my website that deals with trulli structures.

Come learn this ancient roofing technique. Lunch served. $550 Camping on site for $10/night with coffee in the morning.

Please join our workshops if you are physically fit, capable of lifting 40lbs or more frequently, and have a good sense of humor. We laugh a good deal.
